Though none of us expected to leave the doors of Phi Mu in March of 2020 due to a worldwide pandemic, it has built an even stronger bond between us. Through this time, the biggest thing I’ve discovered is the importance of intentional friendships. Before quarantine, seeing sisters was so natural. From waking up and walking to the house to make coffee before class, to giving each other the biggest hugs in the TV room after a stressful day, Phi Mu is a home away from home. When I was having a bad day or needed somebody to laugh with, Phi Mu was my home. But Phi Mu at Florida State University extends beyond the building at 823 W Jefferson Street. Home is not only found in that building, but in the friendships that were built there. Though it has been hard not being able to hug a sister, pile on the couch and watch TV, or eat pizza at Centrale after finals, sisterhood is growing. Though formal was canceled and our Spring Philanthropy event was canceled, the friendships, laughter, and love are more vital than ever. Instead of piling on the couch in the TV room to watch a movie, movie nights look like Zoom calls and the Netflix extension, laughing and talking about our favorite shows. Instead of giving my Phi Mu fam big hugs, love is shown through facetime chats, funny gifs, and virtual hugs. Getting ready together for dinner now looks like trying Bright and colorful makeup looks or dying hair hot pink. Quarantine looks like making tons of crafts for future littles and planning for beach trips. There are little things that we tend to take for granted each day as we continue through our busy lives. But these small things, like walking to your friend’s apartment after dinner at Phi Mu on a Monday night to watch The Bachelor. Or eat homemade cookies with sisters, become so much more than small things during the quarantine. Though we are more excited than ever to get back to these things that once felt normal, we are making the most of quarantine.
